I had one done June 23 of this year so speaking as someone that knows the pain I will give some tips for your mom. First, you need to do the housework if you are old enough, she cant do any heavy lifting or housework until her post operation checkup and she cant lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk for that same time frame. She needs to make sure she takes her pain medicine as needed. I was on percocet (2 every 4 hours per doctors orders) for my pain then after week 2 I had my doctor change it to tylenol 3 with codine (not as strong as percocet). She is to avoid sex as well until her post op check up. She needs to take it easy. She will gradually feel better (by the 3-4 week mark she should be able to stand up straighter). Make sure she holds the pillow over the incision site (if there is one) because that will help with some of the pressure when she sneezes and coughs. I had my hysterectomy done abdominally so it took me some time to recover, but now I am fully recovered and I have never felt better. Also if all she had removed was her cervix and uterus (which is what a total hysterecomy is) then she wont have to worry about periods anymore and she wont have to take any hormone therapy meds. I say by 3-4 weeks she should gradually feel better and by the 6 week mark she should feel a lot better. If she has an incision that will fade after about three months. It will get red and hard and lumpy feeling, but its just healing itself inside and out. She only needs to worry if she starts running a fever of 100 or higher because that could be an infection.
