In a precise sense nano- is a prefix meaning 10 to the -9 power.
So a nanometer is a 10^-9 meters.^
In a more general way, nano is prefix meaning "extremely small". In this way there is nano-particles, nanotechnology (referring to machining extremely small devices) and so on...
It is curious that some years ago one would say "micro" to refer to the very small. Only in recent years, when technology has progressed to this stage the term nano has become more common. The next step would be "Pico" (10^^-12).
Note aside: Something similar but in the other direction is happening with the speeds of computer and capacity of data storage. We are now in the "Giga" realm and starting to move to the "Tera" realm.

Nano means very small. Even smaller than Micro.
In the strictest sense, it's the engineering notation for one one-billionth, or 10^(-6).

nano is a prefix to a unit that means 10 ^ -9
1000 nano things = 1 micro things
1000 micro things = 1 milli things
1000 milli things = 1 thing.
so 1000000000 nano things = 1 thing.
for example 1000000000 nm (nanometer) = 1 meter

Nano- is a prefix that means "one billionth" of something, or more accurately, 1/1,000,000,000 of it.
It's often used in everyday speech to refer to anything built to be very very small -- in modern scifi you'll often here references to "nanorobots," which are microscopic robots.
Hope that helps!

It is a word to designate a specific size on our metric system, it applies for most of the values like kg, liters, meters, etc, and it is the following way.
1 is the unit, you say, 1 meter.
0.1 is the tenth of something, for meters you can say, a deci-meter
0.01 is one hundred fraction of something, for meters you say a centi-meter
0.001 is one thousand fraction of something, for meters you can say a mili-meter
0.000001 is designated with micro, for meters you can say a micro-meter
0.000000001 is designated with nano, for meters you can say a nano-meter
0.000000000001 is designated with the word pico, for meters, you can say a pico-meter.
