A gynecologist is a physician whose specialty is the female reproductive system. What he or she does is basically do an examination of all of the parts that you can't see to make sure everything's healthy.

He or she will take a quick sample of your cervix, which is the bottom end of the uterus that opens into the vaginal cavity. This is to test for cervical cancer, and it's called a pap smear.

A lot of women are a bit nervous about going to the gynecologist because it's such a private area, and can seem kind of cold. No worries there - this doctor sees this stuff a dozen times a day, and there's nothing that will surprise him or her. You can have a female nurse or family member present if you like to keep you a little more comfortable.

As to WHEN you should first see the doc, read below.

Its normal that you got your period. If your not having any problems down there itching rashes ect... than its no reson for the gynecologists. But about your mother you should talk to her. A gyn is a vagina doctor. And since your not sexually active Im hopong then nothing much will happen on your first visit. Im 18 never been to one yet. I never had any problems Im jus starting to become sexually active so I will be goin soon.

Welcome to womanhood! I didn't go to a gynecologist until I was 21, but they say you should go around 15 or 16, just to make sure everything is normal. Definitely go if you start having sex, though - that is a must.

They will be very kind and probably ask you a bunch of questions to make you comfortable and to distract you from the awkwardness of someone looking at your private parts (like, what classes are you taking, what do you like to do for fun, easy fun questions). It doesn't usually take very long and it's painless. Definitely talk to your mom - that's what she's there for! She's gone through it, especially if she gave birth to you (assuming she did). You'll be fine! Good luck!

You don't really need to see a gyno unless you are sexually active or want to get on birth control, although sometimes you can get birth control from your regular doctor. When you do go to the gyno, don't be scared. Usually they only want you to undress if you think something is wrong. If you're a virgin, they usually don't do a pap smear(i.e. they don't make you take your pants off).

If you want to ask your mom about it, just wait to get her alone and when she's not busy and just be like, hey mom, I was wondering if I needed to see a gyno since I got my period. Or, what should I expect when I go see the gyno.

It's a lot easier if you ask her staight forward.

Hey gurl I think you're still too young unless you're feeling pain or having irregular periods. I think you should ask your mom about the gyno because i found it easier to ask my mom all the questions i was wondering. Just say mom i know im young but i was wondering if you could tell me all about a gyno and what happens at an appointment. Hope I helped.

You should start seeing a gynecologist when you feel comfortable, esp. when you start having sex to check for cancers and diseases. Take your mom with you the first time... that's what I did. Health dept. is free and they give you free condoms. It's no secret that 12 year olds are having sex these days...

Not usually, unless you are having girly problems, or painful, or irregular periods! Just ask, your mom has had the same questions!
