Network the two computers together. Connect the drive to one of the the computers and have that computer share that drive with the other computer.

Unless the external drive is networkable; meaning does it have a network port, then it's just a matter of connecting it to the network of computers and accessing it's ip address. However from the sounds of it, this isn't your situation. The above way is the best way to do this.

For the first way, you need at the very least one ethernet port on each computer. If they are newer thay come with one. If not you will need to pick up a ethernet card for about $25 bucks at the local shop. Then connect the two computers with a crossover ethernet cable. (Note: depending on the ethernet cards, you may only need a patch cable as the cards will autosence and crossover themselves. Mac machines have ports that do this.) For a bit more ellaborate network you can include a hub or better a switch to connect the machines together. Networking can be annoying though so if you have a buddy that knows how to do it if you don't then lean on them for help.

Not that I know of. What you can do, if the computers are networked, is connect the drive to one computer, and then enable file sharing and share the external hard drive. It should work like sharing a regular drive, only a little slower.

It is called a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. A stand-alone HDD or set of HDDs that can be accessed via IP or name.

No and yes. You can connect it to one computer and then share it from that computer so the other one sees it. If they are networked of course.

But, simultaneously no.
