usually, com1 is reserved for the built in serial port on the machine. This will look like the monitor connector but have two rows of connections instead of 3.

If your laptop is a newer model, there probably is no COM 1. You will need to buy a USB to Serial Converter cable to give you a Serial Port.

Most newer laptops do not have external serial ports. If you have a build in modem, it might be attached to com1.

You can buy USB to serial adapters. They work great.

the 9 pin thing..

But many newer laptops don't have that, not even same old parallel port
