I was in line buying a lot of school supplies, for my students, and some guy behind me said "wow, you must have a lot of kids!" I was in line by myself (no kids), with 10-15 of each item that I was buying. Why would someone say that? Could it be that I'm a teacher? Could it be that I'm buying to donate supplies? Or is it because I'm black and shopping in the middle of the day, it's natural to assume that I must have a gaggle of kids waiting for me at home?

If it had been me, I'd probably have assumed you were buying for your kids too.

I don't think this particular assumption is all that stupid; although we should probably know better, we assume that school supplies are provided by the school. We may not picture someone from the school actually going out in person to buy anything!

I doubt your race had anything to do with it. But I would have assumed you were catholic!

what does your race have to do with this unless it is a stigma you hold with yourself.
maybe he was just trying to strike up a conversation
maybe you took offence for no reason?
did you let him know you were a teacher buying supplies and if so did his tone change to offend you?
or is it just that u in yer own predjudice assumed because of the color of your skin he implied lots of kids and it offended you?

It just happened to be the first thing that came to his mind and he said something based on that. If he had more time (if he allowed himself more time) he may have come up with those other explanations himself. It hardly seems like he insulted you though (meaning he intentionally tried to hurt your feelings), I think you may be a little oversensitive in this matter.

Probably just because you had tons of school supplies. I do not think race was an issue. It is just unusual.
