Overthrow of a country, usually by small group of persons..
The American Heritage Dictionary defines it , more specifically as " A sudden stroke of state policy involving deliberate violation of constitutional forms by a group of persons in authority." An good example is Army General Francisco Franco's takeover of Spain in the mid 1930's.
It may or may be violent in nature. And usually only the ruling clique or a portion of it are changed. It sometimes may only describe the change of the head of state.
The word rebellion is a much wider term that also includes perpetrators who are not part of the government. Usually the whole government is removed and changed in a rebellion. For, example Fidel Castro's take over of Cuba. He was an outside third party not part of the government, nor the army nor any other authority in Cuba.
The phrase is from the French "coup d'état" which literally translates as "hit (knock) the state".

It's pronounced like cout de ta, but it's a French phrase, and is actually
'coup d'etat'. Coup is a blow, etat is the state, so coup d'etat is a blow against the state. It refers to overturning the government, either by violence or by illegal means.
Does this help?
It's an interesting show. Nice that people can learn from it, and even nicer that they ask questions when they don't know something. Good on ya!

That's from the french expression "coup d'etat". When somebody overthrows an established government by force. Examples: Chile 1973: the CIA backed up Pinochet in assassinating Allende who was democratically elected (watch "Missing" for a good portrait of what happened then).

I think you mean coup d'etat. It means a coup (change in ruling power) of the state. For example, they believe that Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy's vice-president, was the one who orchestrated his assassination. Assuming that's true, by doing so he became President of the U.S. and thereby successfully orchestrated a coup d'etat.
