My sister was diagnosed with PCOS years ago, and diabetes two years ago...I have read that PCOS can cause insulin resistance, but I'm not getting straight answers on the link between the two diseases? Anyone know?

In order to understand the link, you have to understand how insulin resistance (IR) works. It sounds like you've already done some research, so I'll try to be brief. Basically, if you are IR, your cells don't use insulin as efficiently as they should. However, they can still use insulin to control blood glucose levels--it just happens more slowly than usual. This results in the pancreas producing too much insulin because it "thinks" that more insulin is needed since the whole process is happening too slowly. The excess insulin is thought to affect the ovaries, causing them to produce too many male hormones--that's how scientists think IR can cause PCOS.

If not treated, insulin resistance can lead to diabetes. This is because the cells gradually use insulin less and less efficiently (a combination of factors, such as diet and weight, can affect this process). They "resist" insulin because even though there is plenty of insulin available, they can't use it. Eventually they may get to a point where they can't use insulin well enough to keep glucose levels under control. This is a form of type 2 diabetes. Many women with PCOS who have IR or diabetes use the drug metformin to help with insulin function.

Not all people who have IR go on to develop diabetes. Those of us who know that we have IR can follow a healthy diet, exercise, work on losing weight if needed, and take medication if necessary to prevent IR from progressing into diabetes.

according to labtestsonline.org:

Although the cause of PCOS is not well understood, some think that insulin resistance may be a key factor. Insulin is vital for the transportation and storage of glucose at the cellular level; it helps regulate blood glucose levels and has a role in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. When there is resistance to insulin's use at the cellular level the body tries to compensate by making more. This leads to hyperinsulinemia, elevated levels of insulin in the blood. Some believe that hyperinsulinemia may be at least one cause for an increased production of androgens by the ovaries.

Most women with PCOS have varying degrees of insulin resistance, obesity, and lipid dysfunction. Insulin resistance tends to be more pronounced in those who are obese and do not ovulate. These conditions put those with PCOS at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

hope this helps...thanks for the points...

I'm a 45 year old woman and was recently diagnosed as being a borderline diabetic. My doctor prescribed some medication, but before filling it I decided to do some research on the internet which led me to the methods. After reading this ebook and applying the methods, my scepticism turned to 100% belief. I noticed that my energy levels increased significantly and I felt more rested in the morning, my symptoms started going away.

I am very happy to tell you that I have been feeling better than I have felt in years and my doctor informed me that he will be taking me off my prescriptions if I keep this up.

I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

PCOS doesn't cause diabetes, however, you are more likely to get it. Your body doesn't handle different types of food correctly, so you just need to be careful.
