A princess is the daughter of the queen - who is either the ruler or married to the ruler of the country.

A princess will remain princess until the king and the queen dies and no one of his brothers or sisters becomes king or queen.
By definition the princess is only the daughter of the queen or the king, and the queen can be a) the wife of the king or b) a single woman who inherited the crown because she was a princess.

The Queen is either a rightful ruler in herself or married to the King. If she is the ruler she is married to a "Prince Consort." She has the "authority" to suggest or make laws according to the "laws" of her land.

A Princess is the daughter of a Queen or King or of a Duke (usually himself a Prince, such as Charles, Duke of Cornwall.) She will almost always stay a Princess unless she marries a King or is "First in Line to the Throne" and becomes Queen, such as Princess Elizabeth did when she became Queen Elizabeth.

Also, in a "Principality" such as Monaco, the highest "rank" attainable IS Prince or Princess and they are called "His/Her Serene Highness" so-and-so of Monaco, where the Princesses of England are "Her Royal Highness" because England ranks much higher. So, in a Principality, Prince or Princess will "always" be the highest title of any ruler.

Good question.

A queen is actually in the throne (or her husband is in the throne). A princess is the daughter of royalty. This could be of the king and queen or of a prince and princess.
