My husband and I are a younger couple who purchased a home in a prettty wealthy area. Most of my neighbors are caucasian. We've been in our home for 2 years and our neighbors don't seem to respect us. We are pretty quiet people but I have made several attempts to become friendly with people on the block but most of them won't even speak to us. They have allowed their children to destroy our property (mailbox, my car has been hit with several baseballs). They always have barbecues but we're never invited. I refuse to attempt to be friendly anymore but it seems as though they are trying to make us sell our home and I refuse to. I'm a cop and my husband is a firefighter. We have no kids and we keep our property in perfect shape yet they report simple things to our home association such as our mailbox having a dent eventhough their children made the dent. I just want to live in peace. What can I do?

I'm not calling anyone racist but we had a white family move onto the block last year and everyone seems to be more friendly towards them.

with you being a cop and your husband a firefighter you should both be commended for choosing such selfless jobs. as for your neighbors try having a BBQ yourself and invite them. get a camera your can hide and catch the kids on tape causing the damage, then the next time they report you go to an HOA meeting and show the tape. that will shut them up. just continue to be yourself. don't move because if you do they win. show them you have as much right to be their as they do. regardless of what others have answered this is a race issue because most wealthy people are taught that they still have the right to treat people like sh*t. good luck to you and i hope everything works out for you. just remember....continue to be nice to them. eventually it will rub off on them : )

Have you tried to set up some surveillance equipment to catch whoever is hitting your car with baseballs and/or destroying your mailbox? Have you attended any association meetings? The association meetings will allow you to meet them all and to let them know that they don't have to be friends with you, but they do have to respect you and your home. This will also let them know that you are aware of what is going on in the neighborhood, that you are a police officer, and that you will prosecute their children and even them if the destruction of property continues. Assert yourself. Don't sell your home; you have the right to live anywhere you can afford to live. Stupidity, ignorance, racism, and pettiness reveals itself at all income brackets. Good luck.

This may not be PC but usually the poor white neighborhoods here are trailer parks and I've never seen bars on a trailer park.

That's pretty mean of them. Maybe they were taught by their parents not to associate with black people!! That's so rude of them. I think you should move out of that area. Move to South Africa...you'll have a lot of black people as your neighbours, even if you don't, the white people would still like you!!

Try and ignore your neighbours, even though you've had the decency to be friendly with them. What goes around comes around, they'll soon realise that they should've made friends with you!!

That's horrible! You are being treated with hostility. I say don't you dare give in. If they want you out, stay. I should think destruction of a private property is vandalism, isn't it? They are probably just scared of you (for very bad reasons, you're obviously wonderful people.)

Decorate the mailbox dents. what can it hurt?

Isn't racism a crime? Isn't vandalism a crime? I think it should be treated like a crime.

Hi Im white and lived in a black neighborhood so it is not about race. They may feel awkward about how to act with you,My advice go out and meet some of your neighbors, all it takes to change something is to change it yourself.Invite next door neighbor to coffee, you wont regret it.

Wow!! How ignorant can ppl be?!! Being me, I probably would've came straight out my face to them. ALL of them. But that wouldn't solve anything. Couldn't you do anything about it? I mean you ARE a cop... doesn't that mean anything? I know this probably isn't of much help, so I'm sry if I just wasted your time. But I thought I should at least say that much.

move out of that area - or better yet since you want to be freind and they dont then you could actually take them to court for hitting baseballs through your malbox - its wierd people say whats hapenning to the world but there's still racism

First of all, this is NOT a race issue. Try not to take anything personally about property damage, because it happens everywhere, my dear. Neighbors in all neighborhoods generally keep to themselves, so don't feel singled out. I can't help but to mention again....this is not about race. Stop focusing on B.S.
