Bel Canto, The Beet Queen, The Lovely Bones, Empress Orchid, The God of Small Things, Midnight's Children, The Shipping News
(I've already read them all so I need new recommendations).

I've already read - The Secret Life of Bees, Life of Pi, East of Eden, some Harry Potter books and the Da Vinci Code, plus a lot of other stuff I didn't mention. Probably East of Eden is one of the best American classics ever written.

Be adventurous and try something new. Such as: Why Do Men Have Nipples: Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini. And: Why Do Men Fall Asleep After Sex: More Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Whiskey Sour. By Mark Leyner.
Funny and you'll learn something.
Check out Amazon for books by Mark Leyner. A great satirist. He takes on anyone and everyone.

Check out The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It's sad but inspirational. Also, it provides a good insight into life in Afghanistan that most foreigners don't see.

King Fortis the Brave, Harry Potter and Eragon are my favorites!
If I had to pick one it would probably be King Fortis. The characters are the most believable and it has the right mix of action and humor.

A beautiful book is 'Birdsong' by Sebastian Faulks. Or, if you are feeling ambitious you could read 'In search of Lost Time' by Marcel Proust a truly magnificent book.
