She's 53 and I don't think she's ever gotten one, at least not within the last 10 years. Breast cancer does not run in our family, but I'm still concerned.

Tell her that it is a painless, simple way of protecting her health. Many people tend to disregard these tests if everything feels alright, but she is really putting herself in a risky position if she does not go for a mammogram. Maybe she can get a female technician like I do to do the test. She might feel more comfortable that way. I am also 53 but have had several, and they did find a lump which was removed, but what if it was cancer? Luckily it wasn't.
Tell her of the peace of mind she will have when the test is over and she sees it is all alright, or if there is something that shows up she may have caught it in time to recover from it.

Women over the age of 40 should get a mammogram at least every two years. Tell her a mammogram is slightly uncomfortable they take your breasts and squeeze them in between two plastic plates to compress the breasts to get a clearer image of the tissues etc. Also NOW they might use a MRI OR CT SCAN. Being uncomfortable for about 5 to 10 minutes might saver her LIFE. YOU CANT ALWAYS DETECT NODULES OR LUMPS ETC WITH SELF EXAMINATION.

If she gets a yearly pap smear test, the o.b. will also give her a prescription for a mammogram plus a talk about how important monthly breast exams are and the importance of a yearly mammogram. Unfortunately, the old saying about taking a horse to water by you can't make him drink is true in people as well as horses.

Get a pamphlet and give it to her and tell her that she needs to do it for you. Make a day of it. She gets a mammogram, you get a breast exam, then go buy shoes for being responsible women.

You could say the doctors rang and asked to speak to her about booking one. It might convince her to ring in and book one. Or just tell her you're scared of getting one and would like her to do it too so that you can relax and not worry. Or....you could say that for your new life insurance policy you need a family health history up to date so you need her to get one. I'm clutching at straws!!!

See if you can find pictures on a site with women who have had 1 or both breasts removed, and ask her if she wants to look like that

Leave your Mom alone. She is an adult and can choose for herself what she want to do and what she doesn't.
