I've heard some colleges don't consider pre med to be a major but what about UCSD?
Also is anyone studying to be a plastic surgeon... I'd like to ask you some questions.

Some schools have a pre-med major. Others call it a pre-med track.

Basically being a biology major, chemistry major (with biology classes), or a biochem major will be sufficient for medical school.

UCSD has a premed program, I'm sure of that.

For the most part, there is no pre-med undergraduate major. However, most universities have pre-med tracks but you can major in whatever you want. A lot of people choose biology, but some others pick psychology, humanities, nutrition, chemistry, etc. The pre-med track just allows you to take all the classes needed for med school - (biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, anatomy, calculus, etc.) As long as you get these core classes in, you can major in just about anything and still get into medschool.

Just make sure to get good grades, especially in your science classes. And, do some community service and take on leadership roles to help your chances of getting into a good med school.

Essentially pre-med is having enough undergrad training in the sciences (biology, chemistry, etc.) to prepare you to formally enter med school.

Now some schools actually do have a pre-med major, while others do not. For those that don't, you'd simply major in a science like chemistry for example, and take a wide variety of different science and math classes to help prepare you for the rigors of med school.

Same deal as pre-law, which is generally philosophy. Pre-med is generally a science major.

In most colleges, it's a pre-med program. You usually major in bio or chem, or even psychology. The program just insures you take the courses necessary to pass the MCATs and enter medical school

The first poster pretty much answered it. If you are interested in med then you need to talk to the individual schools you are interested in . I guess you are interested in UCSD, but also look into some other school as well because they may have better programs/precentages of people getting into medical schools. Also, be sure to go to www.fastweb.com and see what kinds of scholarships you can get for your school/field!
