And is the movie going public tired of the same formula crap? Are they turning to reality TV not because its good but simply because it's less predictable than your "correctly" written and produced movie? We spend so much time on A and B stories, character arcs, all is lost moments and the hero's journey so that we can emotionally connect with viewers.

But in Miami Vice there is none of that. Well, there's a B story, but no character arcs or many other of the "correct" moments of a movie. Instead, you get a lot of spectacle, and bad assed people doing bad assed things.

I saw this movie with a group, and all of us agreed that is was an unusual movie, but engaging none the less. At first I thought it was a little simplistic. Now I am wondering if it is genius.

Your thoughts?

I haven't seen Miami Vice but I do agree Michael Mann is a great filmmaker. "Heat", with Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, is one of my favorite all-time films, and "The Insider" with Russell Crowe was great too.

No. Orson Welles was a genius; Alfred Hitchcock was a genius; Fredrico Fellini was a genius; Ingmar Bergman, Jean-Luc Godard, Luis Bunuel, Stanley Kubrick, Yashujiro Ozu and Carl Theodore Dreyer were/are geniuses. Michael Mann is not.

It is never a good idea to copy a well written show and continue the idea into a two and a half hour film.

The problem with verisimilitude is that it can get in the way of good story-telling.

Mann tells good stories, but it sometimes can get lost with the effects and action
