Depends on the species of piranha (red bellied and a few other, larger species), and the season. In the Amazon's dry season, piranhas are concentrated into fairly small muddy pools, and at this time of year, they become very agressive, and will attack. Mostly, for someone the size of a human, piranha are unlikely to be more of a threat than their vegetarian counterparts, though blood may attract them.
In the aquarium, piranha are also a lot more likely to hide from a hand introduced to the tank than they are to even attempt a nibble - sadly, their reputation is very exaggerated.
Out and about in that part of the world, it's freshwater stingrays you want to be careful of.

They aren't really dangerous, at least not to humans. In fact, there are hardly ever te feeding frenzies everyone seems to think they have. They are more opportunistic than that, and will generally take a chomp out of some of the larger fish that they happen across, but nothing more. Most fish swim away just a little grazed after an encounter with a piranha. They will eat dead carrion that ends up in the river, and there is alot of that, such as dead animals, dead fish, and animal waste, and that forms a large part of their diet.

Piranhas can be very dangerous if you are bleeding. They go after the smell of blood in the water, and go into such a feeding frenzy they will even kill their own kind to try to get to the food. Normally they will leave you alone if you leave them alone, they don't wan to fight with a creature that can fight back, so dead animals are what they really like.
In many areas it is not the Piranhas it is the Sting Rays that kill a lot of people, because if you accidently step on a Sting Ray they can do a lot of dammage and that can become fatal if not treated quickly.
We'll I'm glad you enjoyed eating the piranha because I wouldn't think a small fish would be very good.

There are two types of Piranhas - one kind which eats meat and another kind which is vegetarian. Obviously the vegetarian variety are not dangerous at all. The meat eating ones can be dangerous on mass when they are hungry. When I was younger we used to have a tank with Piranha fish and I can remember digging up worms to feed to them. I got very quick with my fingers as I honestly think they would have taken they end of them off given a chance. I don't think I'd go in the water and risk meeting them in a bad mood.

Piranhas are more likely to eat chickens and dead/dying animals and fish. If they were to attack a human they would have to be in the 1000's in numbers.

Well, "Ginger", I think the most dangerous thing there is the troll who keeps posting his questions about Compton in this forum. He says he goes there and gets pushed around, but he's really just making it up. Why do you need to go there? It's not bad during the day, and there are actually nice parts of Compton. But it really should be avoided at night.

When I was in Peru, I went swimming in an ox-bow lake where there were piranhas swimming. I did not get so much as my toe-nails chewed (thankfully). I could see them in the water, but they weren't interested in me. Did not think about chucking them a drumstick.
Anyway, when you fed them chicken, did they like it? Would they have thought something like "Mmm, takes like chicken"??

Apparently, not to humans. From the source below,
"Piranhas generally pose no threat to humans."
"Piranha fish rarely try to eat animals much larger than themselves."
