The turtle I own seems to recognize my parents-especially my father, because he is the one who feeds her most of the time, he gets it out of the aquarium, he is taking care of it for short-.At the beginning, I have to says it seemed kind of clueless and tore apart from reality, or at least from the one humans distinguished. But now it has grown older (maybe 5 or 6 years, I don't know for sure) and it looks more aware of my family. It follows us through the house and sometime seems to react when I try calling her (I may be exaggerating in interpreting it's behavior).Anyway, I think it developed some kind of relationship with us.

They can certainly recognize an owner, and often come to the side of the tank during feeding, or learn to come to you to signal a desire for food. My Red-foot tortoise would do this.

However- they will never come when you call for the simple reason that they cannot hear- other than feeling vibrations.

Coming when you call is basically a trick, and turtles are not really big into doing tricks.

yes they do recognize you by sight and may condition itself to know your the one that feeds it. But no way have i ever seen a turtle that answers commands to come, sit etc. That will never happen. It might comes towards you cause it recognizes the person who cares for it but thats it

Yes because if I walk into the room with the turtle in it the turtle gets excited in hopes of food. If anyone else walks in it doesn't do anything.

It depends on what kind of turtle. If it's the kind you buy at the fair, than probably not. Larger ones do recognize things more by smell than by sight. I guess it might be possible.

I've had a turtle for almost my entire life. He sits in an aquarium and eats tomatoes. I've come up to him many, many times. He never seems to recognize me.

He could just be mad that I named him Myrtle...

Totally!

The local zoo has a tortise (not turtle) that has it's favorite handler. She will come over and rub her head against his knee. It's very cute.

What an interesting question. I would have to say yes. Animals are smarter than alot of people give them credit for.

From experience I have to agree that they can. Our turtle growing up def. knew my mom was the "giver of lettuce leaves" and would follow her around the kitchen. He was so cute scuttling around behind her. His name was Alvin.
