Friction and by default, heat and also velocity. But knowing how Gyms work, I would think they answer they are looking for is "Resistance" They would want this answer because they know that everyone coming into the gym may not be physics majors so they phrase the question so simply that the first answer that comes to your mind would be "resistance".

The faster you move the greater the resistance. Because speed of movement determines resistance you simply move faster or slower depending on your physical condition. Strength training has been proven as the solution to permanent body fat reduction.

Resistance: any mechanical force that tends to retard or oppose motion

Tension: the physical condition of being stretched or strained

I think you are confusing "resistance" with tension.

Tension is directly proportional to speed. You can generate more tension if you move the weight faster or use heavier weight. When it come to muscle development or athletic performance (with the exception of endurance sports) SPEED IS KING.
