There are all kinds of idiots in Amsterdam. It's too bad because it is pretty. There are too many morons who come to party and end of causing trouble. I think the Foreign embassies there must keep really busy. I was just there a few weeks ago and me and my husband were sitting at a nice cafe in the evening having a drink when some stupid young man came yelling down the street he was trying to frighten people sitting in the Cafes. He said something to one old man and his wife and the old man actually stood up and was clearly going to do something about it if he had to so the man picked up a beer glass and smashed it on the ground. All of a sudden large waiters came from all over the place and tackled the guy to the ground. They were a little brutal to him while they were waiting for the cops. I remember his pants fell down in the process and no one ever bothered to pull them back up which was yucky.

I have never gone to Amsterdam just to go to Amsterdam. I have always been there on layovers. This was jsut the first time I stayed a few days to do anything touresty. I wouldn't bother to do it again.

I wasn't almost mugged when I was in Amsterdam. I ignored the crackheads and bums and they didn't bother me. And same for the hookers actually. They were trying to lure EVERYONE into their weird little rooms.

I thought the Rijksmuseum was one of the best art museums in the world (and I've been to a lot of them). I would go back

I live near Amsterdam and I've heard from my American fiance he had some crackheads approaching him first time he came out. Just don't go to areas as the red light district, or otherwise not at night or after dark. There are some weirdos running around, but they mostly try to look for ignorant tourist. Don't look people in the face too long to get your attention.
For info go to tourist info instead.

funny I've been living here for an entire year and have yet to even feel uneasy on the streets. I feel safer here than in any city in the US.

Granted I steer clear of the redlight district but have to ride a street away from it from time to time and have not had any problems.

Amsterdam is such a great city and I really hate the bad rap it gets cause of idiots like you that can't stay out of trouble cause you're too busy getting high or drunk to pay attention and have some common sense.

I live in The Hague , my friends and I go into Amsterdam quite often, and there's no way any hooker will drag you in unless you give them reason or hang out near Central Station.
Bums are no problem, just ignore them and you just have to watch your stuff.
I've just come back from a trip to New York, trust me it's not that save a place either, but come on that's the city!

I adore Amsterdam! I went once two years ago. It was fabulous. The shopping was amazing. I'm actually going back to The Netherlands tomorrow to visit my good friends that live there. They live 30 minutes outside of Amsterdam, so there is no doubt I will be going back into the city.

So I guess the correct answer to this question is that it went amazing and yes I would go back, and I am. I'm flying into Schiphol airport tomorrow evening.

I was in Amsterdam, but only for a day. I was accompanied by my Belgian friends, who knew the city, somewhat. I spent much of my own time, touring the Rijsmuseum and the Van Gogh museum. Although I experienced no problems of my own, my friend's brother had some camera equipment stolen from the car.

Sounds like you spent too much time in the red light district. It was kind of crack head central. My husband called the scary looking hookers in the windows, doorway gorillas. They were a little aggressive. We had a great time, but after one walk through we had enough of the red light district.

I live close by Amsterdam and have never had the type of problems you speak about. I think you must have a vivid imagination.
