More importantly, you really need a Firewall between the router, and the modem!
See? Modem is the gateway to your private home, or the business network!
I put an old 300 pentium running IPCOP, and headless, at the modem, and the router plugs into that! Then, I am protected, my mail is sorted with Spam assassin, and the kiddie's websites are filter for content! http://ipcop.org is free, and will serve up to about 36 computers on a network, though, then, Dan's Guardian should need a faster CPU, say 800mhz, and a drive in the 6Gb to 20Gb range.

A modem is "Short for modulator/demodulator. A communications device that converts one form of a signal to another that is suitable for transmission over communication circuits, typically from digital to analog and then from analog to digital."
A router is "A device or setup that finds the best route between any two networks, even if there are several networks to traverse. Like bridges, remote sites can be connected using routers over dedicated or switched lines to create WANs."
Basically, a modem is used to transmit data over different types of cables, like phone lines, coaxial cable, etc, whenever using more direct forms (like network cables) are not practical.
A router is something completely different, it basically finds the fastest path from one point to another in a LAN.

1st Modem:
It stands for Modulation / Demodulation. It take the input from over the network which is not in binary form (0's & 1's that computer understand) and converts it to binary and send it to the computer. Like wise, it take input from computer which is again in Binary and converts it into network tranferable format so that it could be tranmitted over the network.
2nd Router:
In a Local Area Network, many clients are connected to once server. To accept the request from all the clients and respond to these request, we make use of the Router, which routes each respond to the appropriate client.
