Why do people tell you to go to the dentist before you are pregnant? Are you not alllowed to go while you are pregnant? My husband and I have been trying for a few months. I have already seen my doc and I am taking vitamins. We are trying to do everthing right. Well, I read online (getting ready for a baby forum) to go to the dentist. I am scheduling my teeth cleaning. Also, Does the epidural hurt? When I think of having a baby it scares me because I am terrified of needles. Also, I heard if you move or jump you could be paralyzed. Is there any one else pregnant or trying to get pregnant thats terrified of the epidural?

well first ive never heard of going to the dintist before your preg i dont know why that would be unless its because while your preg you cant get xrays or shouldnt, and the epidural, ok i am scared to death of needles and i was so scared when i went into labor i was more scared of the needle going in my back than of the labor itself, lol but its not that bad compared to the way labor feels, i was 8 centimeters dialated and i was like ok! i cant take it anymore, so it just feels like a sting, its seriously not that bad! i promise, and labor isnt as bad as people say either dont let people scare you to death, telling you labor and the epidural is horrible, its not as bad as people say. dont stress sweetie

Ok, first, the dentist. When you are pregnant, your gums bleed alot more than when you are not pregnant. It is advisable to go before you get pregnant so you don't have to worry about the blood. Also, if they have to do any work, then if you are pregnant they are limited in what meds they can give you.

Second, epidural...I've had three kids. My first two were completely natural, no drugs of any kind; that was not by choice. My third I was able to have an epidural. The needle is "hidden" from you so you never actually see it. Your contractions hurt much more the the needle does, so at that point, you just want the pain to stop. You forget how much you hate needles. As far as being paralyzed, the odds of that happening aren't even enough to have a number. I can assure you that you won't be jumping. You will be moving, and that's ok. I slept with mine, turing all through the night.

Take a deep breath, relax, and just let nature happen. You'll love being pregnant. Good luck.

I just found out I am pregnant about a month ago. I was told to wait until the 2nd trimester to go to the dentist and to only get a cleaning. I am a bad patient and must have gas for any procedure so a cleaning is about all I can handle since the dentist won't give me gas while I am pregnant.

As for the epidural, I had one with my son 4 years ago b/c I needed a c-section. First of all I was shivering and shaking from nerves and the cold temp in the operating room. The man told me what he was doing, when he was doing it, and what I would feel. I told him I was shivering and was afraid of being paralyzed b/c I couldn't sit still. He assured me that they do so many the % was extremely low of paralyzing anyone. It is all done behind you with no way to see what they are preparing behind you. The nurse was holding my hands the entire time and I still jumped a few inches off the table when I felt the needle prick me. The pain immediately went away and they laid me down on the table. My son is 4 and I am not paralyzed from jumping.

I went to the dentist while I was pregnant to get my teeth cleaned. As far as the epidural goes, you will be praying for it!!! You are not going to care if it hurts or not. It really doesnt though. It just feels really cold. I did hear that if you move then it could paralyze you, but I dont know if that is true or not. I got my epidural in when I was having a contraction and i did jerk a little bit, but my husband kept me still. Good luck, everything will be fine.

You can see your dentist through your pregnancy. The only problem that may come up is that you shouldn't have x-rays. And you can only have freezing in your second trimester so it is best to get any work done before you get pregnant. Also your gums take a bit of a beating while you are pregnant so it is a good idea to make sure that you have good oral health if you are thinking of getting pregnant

As for your epidural question I have never had one...My local hospital does not offer them. I found that Demerol worked every well and you don't have to have a needle. They can inject it into your IV and it works right away.

Keeping your teeth clean while pregnant is important. Any infection you are to get will be passed on to the baby. Nothing to serious, and yes you can go to the dentist while you're pregnant, just be sure if you need an x-ray they are aware that you are pregnant. As for the epidural you can not be paralyzed by it. Paralysis isnt a risk because there isnt a spinal cord near the injection. I am pregnant and trust me you should get over the needle thing because you give alot of blood for testing to be sure the baby is healthy.

When you are pregnant you have more bacteria in your mouth and your gums swell more, so it's important to keep them very clean. You can go to the dentist while pregnant, in fact you should go. You need to get the x-rays and any cavities done before you are pregnant because the x-rays are harmful during a pregnancy and the dentist wont do them.

I wont get an epidural either. I luckily didn't need it for my first. I had pain reliever through IV and I dealt with it fine. I've heard too many bad stories about the epidural and don't want to take any chances.

The dentist thing comes from:
1) your gums tend to be more sensitive while you're preg. and will sometimes bleed during regular brushing (which would be worse during a heavy duty dentist cleaning) and

2) if you need any work done to your teeth it's best to get that done before you're pregnant in case you need pain killers, which wouldn't be good for the baby.

As for the epidural. I found it to be less painful than a regular shot. A nurse will help steady you so you don't move and mess it up, besides you'll be so afraid of messing it up you WILL hold very still. Since you won't be able to see it as it's happening it's not too bad. And it's a LOT better than the actual labor pains, well worth it in my opinion!

Good luck with your preg!

You need to go to the dentist because pregnancy can make you teeth worse. While your pregnant be sure to brush after every meal, floss, and rinse with mouth wash. I didn't know this and my teeth aren't to great anymore.
When having my baby I asked for an epidural and they stuck me 4 times in the back and couldn't get it in because i'm short and the spaces between my bones are close together. But No it doesn't hurt. With them sticking the needle in. I couldn't get any further but the needle didn't hurt. I think you concentrating on the pain more then the needle. Trust me if you can go through labor you can take a needle.

It is wise of you to go to the dentist before b/c while you are pregnant most dentist will not give you medications or the gas if you have to have surgery done or have an extraction. Most will not do anything. Plus while you are pregnant your teeth are not getting all the nutrients it is use to getting to b/c most are going to help your baby be healthy. This makes your teeth very susceptible to disease or cavities. I did not have an epidural. However i got a small dose of medication similar to it that also goes into the spine it doesn't hurt b/c your contraction pains are all you can really think about. kenziebuchanan@hotmail.com if you have anymore questions.

I dont belive in epidurals. I have had 2 children both with out and am currently pregnant again and will not get one with this baby either. I belive women having been giving birth forever and a day with out medication. why start now??
as for the dentist, they say that so you can have work done if needed before you get pregnant. As it is best not to allow any type of medication into your body(unless medically needed) so they dont want you to a freezing or a higher need for antibiotics and stuff. but you can have a check up and even a teeth cleaning with out and troubles.
:)
