You shouldn't need to graft a walnut tree. They are very happy growing on their own roots - and usually do. I have never seen one grafted, at least.

If you plant a walnut, they sprout fairly easily but you have to be prepared to wait for between 8 and 12 years for them to fruit. It's just possible that if you grafted a twig from an older tree onto a maiden (first year) sapling, it would fruit quicker.
