Secession was American and will always be American, no matter the reason. The "Union" was/is America, the laws and contracts really did not see the need to put a label on the matter if a state could withdraw from the group... so guess what., it happened.

Americans grew out of a tradition of spitting in the eye of the big man. We got the tired of the English running our show, so we bailed. The south got tired of many things, fill in "your" belief here, and they bailed with the same spite.

Americans fought for independence in the Revolution.
Confederates fought for the same principles as the previous, sadly, including slavery.

Since America has supported almost every belief and system since its birth, its really hard to rule out anything as anti- American. The thing is -American, can be for or against, today or yesterday.

Then there is the whole free speech thing.

Pretty much. If you believe that being a confederate has nothing to do with other races and more to do with state rights and secession from a federal government gone mad -- then be a Republican or member of the Conservative party. The difference between these groups and confederates is solely their views on race. Using state's rights and 'heritage' is a fig leaf for 'Confederates' to cover their hate.

That would depend on how you look at confederates. If you're like me and you believe that being a confederate has nothing to do with other races and more to do with state rights and secession from a federal government gone mad -- then being a confederate is a fairly 'American' position.

Now if you relate being a confederate to being a mask for racism and bigotry -- then no, you're not being very 'American'.

Yes, by definition a confederate believes in a state's right to brake any from the union. The Union is called America.

The biggest mistake the North made in 1861 was allowing the South to withdraw from the Union, when they should have tossed the South out on it's ear.
