Well, I'm not unhappy. I suppose, though, that many are bored or don't feel comfortable expressing their unhappiness in person. I know some people that feel they must always put on a "happy face" in their daily lives when truly underneath they are unhappy, and that if they show their real emotions they will be rejected. So chat rooms offer the perfect environment for them to express their true feelings because they are "disconnected" from the people in the chat rooms.

That is a good question and if we new the answer to that wouldn't be easyer in any chat room you go in there is always someone that is unhappy it seems to be the theme that you go in to a room and someone unhappy but wouldn't it be weird if you went in and everyone was happy what would that be like

Many are looking for attention. If you tell someone you are having a great day, they pretty uch say good ofr you and move on. If you tell someone you are having a crappy day, people want to know why because then they may be able to help you feel better. Or, people want to know why because it makes them feel better about their own day.
Unhappy people in chat rooms make me think of people with low self esteem. They constantly put themselves down and people will compliment them to build them up.

the reason is simple, they dont have enough friends to pass or kill their free time.its really boring to keep on typing without actual personal interaction that's why i believe people seem to be unhappy in chat rooms.the reason could also be that u can share ur secrets or problems with strangers easily than with that of ur loved ones nd no person feels happy remembering their sorrows.

Some people frequent chat rooms because they don't have many friends, or because it's easier for them to communicate online than face-to-face. On the Internet you can create a persona to be what you want to be, not necessarily who you are...which is why it pays to be cautious when dealing with online "friends."

I have not encountered this but I only chat in a few places.
maybe there could be a way to encourage the Gloomy Guses you meet there and ask them what makes them happy?
you are not responsible for making anyone be happy and you can just ignore them too.

Happy people are out having a life. Not to put down chatroom users. People with depression tend to push people in their life away, then they wonder why they're lonely. They do try to reach out for help, but they really need face to face contact.
