"Women's Studies" is a science that in any scientific field relates to women. In a previous question I jokingly took another spin on it, which is grossly misunderstood at the moment. Therefore, a serious question to follow it up - before I alienate myself from women completely, haha.

Why is it that, from secondary school level, women on the whole get better results in exams and academic work - yet men have the leading roles in business and even at universities? What's your view on this, what do you think needs change?

Enough with the sarcasm, ladies. Read the question before you answer it (it looks smarter when you do).

Char.xxxxx.. Yes, this is all about you and how smart and cute you are. Why don't you put up a contact link - afraid someone might retort your insults?

It's all one big sh*t, no matter if women are smarter or not, they will never be smarter then men. Nor stronger, or ever had a strenght to fight.

Men will always rule over... Maybe cause they are less passionate, but I don't know, looks like it's from the prehistory...

No matter how genius they could be, it's worthless. Give you a few examples:
During the Ancient Age(Rome), and till XX century, woman has been put down. CONSTANTLY ... ever since...by men, of course. There were women queens, scientists, etc, but in a large society, basicly there's nmo theory they could get any bigger role. "Women are weak, too passionate, only for rising children, and for being around the house". Maybe. Are you aware if women would rule the world, there wouldn't be any war. Ever. Then again, you can't equal women and men in some same areas, such as science, art, etc... Man is a strong character, more cooler.
But the real, and only reason women are below men, are women themselves.
Albert Einstain had a wife, Milena, who basicly calculated all his ideas... And soon he became famouse, and won the Nobel, he divorced.:

Perhaps this is due to the old boys network generally favouring males. Also we are constantly having to battle against stereotypes, I frequently get mistaken for a Secretary when I am actually an Engineer.

Some women try the bra burning feminism followed by the useless female acts to often where it gets to the point they are acting like Jeckyll and Hyde! The trick is to get a balance!

Personally I don't rate Womens Studies as a Science!

There're many reasons.

Firstly, women are more compassionate while men are more competitive. i.e. women are more people-oriented while men are more task-oriented.

Secondly, though the world has gradually evolved, women are still undermined and discriminated in a male-dominant environment. the mindset of male being the breadwinner of the family seems too deeply embedded that it is higly resistant to change.

Thirdly, perhaps it is a blessing to men that women are only smarter academically. Imagine that men have to be the breadwinner of the household yet not being able to rise up to that expectation.

Changes in the area of perception and expectation are required. But I am of the view that such changes will not happen anytime soon.

No offence, just my honest opinion.

both men and women are different (a bit obvious, but bear with me) The female brain and logic is wired very differently from a male brain and logic). That's generally why you find mostly male engineers, and female nurses. There are exceptions of course, but there are exceptions to every rule. Women tend to remember every little detail about their children, and men are vaguely aware of little people in the house (a comedy exxageration, but you get the point) Women see Valentine's day as an important romantic day on the calendar, and men see it as a "hallmark holiday"

Academically, women have different strengths than men (and I'm not simply trying to be sexist here, but it's a proven general trend). Women have higher social skills than men, and men are more tuned to hunting. Therefore, women will find language and social subjects easier. Men will find the sciences and maths easier. Have you ever noticed that (generally, as there are always exceptions) when men look at a road map, they look at it with north pointing up, but when women look at a road map, they swivel it to point in the direction of travel? This shows the differences in logic between the sexes.

In relation to your question, we do live in a male dominant society, which is rapidly turning into an equal society. The thing is, it will soon overbalance and become a female dominant society. Women don't need to be concerned, as they will soon be the bosses, and us men will be the lower class of the two... (And I like the sound of that!!! he he ;-D)

Yes, men have the leading roles in business NOW- but that is very quickly changing. The world and its concept of women in the business world is finally coming up to par. There are many more women in business and at the top than there used to be. it is more difficult for them, also, being the one who carries the babies for 9 months, then gives birth. If she has a husband/partner who is willing to share the responsibilities of child rearing equally- a woman should be able to do as well- (or better) than men.

"Leading roles in business" have nothing to do with intelligence. If you really want to compare the general intelligence of men and woman, you need to conduct and/or consult formal scientific studies on that subject. These show that men are overrepresented at both the top AND bottom of the intellectual Bell Curve.

The fact that girls do better in secondary school is easily attributable to sociological factors. Boys are discouraged from doing well by the pervasive idea that its unmasculine. And the educational setting is better designed for the learning style of girls than boys.

Intelligence has nothing to do with social conditioning. As you quite clearly point out, women achieve more when in a fair, just and equal opportunistic environment (i.e. school). However, by the time women join the labour market, discrimination kicks in. Have you heard of the 'glass ceiling' effect? It simply means that sex discrimination ensures that women only ever reach so high up the employment ladder, regardless of their talent and suitability for a role. They get so far and then hit this glass barrier, thus preventing them from rising to positions of real power.

What needs to be done? Women have to use their collective voices to speak out against such discrimination. Companies need to scrutinise their employment policies and promote women-friendly policies that recognise the needs of women as separate but equally valid to the needs of men in the workplace.

There are some smart women..there are some smart men....women do better in GCSE's and A level....but you don't have to excel in exams to be smart!!

Things are changing with equal opportunities...I get paid the same as the men in my job....women also return to work now after maternity leave.

Maybe it's to do with power rather than the academic work.....myself it's anything for a quiet life and I'm happy to plod along. I don't have ambition....maybe that's whats needed to change!!

I don't speak on behalf of other women/men...just my own opinion.

I think academically girls are more studious and boys more fun loving, ( from what I have experienced as a student and a teacher). Its not seen as cool for boys to work hard.

Men excel in business because of out-dated 'glass-ceilings'.

Unfortunately that can only change over time, like womens rights have evolved since Emmeline Pankhurst fought for votes.

Women aren't smarter than men! That is just my opinion. If I had my way, women would still be housewives, meant to take care of their man, his house, cook his meals, do his dishes, do the laundry, and rub his feet(or anything else he wants rubbed). I think that men are more mentally stable than women, and are more capable of holding official roles, such as leading the country, being deans at universities. I think that women go to pieces far too easily, and that is why I think that men are more well suited for jobs such as those.
