It started with stingy Northern businesses moving plants to the South to take advantage of cheaper, more docile labor that wouldn't unionize to save their souls. Then people started moving there from devastated Northern areas for the jobs. The population shift gave the South more voting strength in Congress, so power has shifted to the Far Right.
In addition, such noxious cultural expressions as country music, NASCAR, and Fundamentalism have spread beyond their Southern base and infected the rest of the country.
In order to protect our way of life, should the North-- from Minnesota to Maine and down to Maryland-- secede from the Union? And maybe the West Coast be independent as well?
The South cannot object, since they tried secession before and still resent getting beat in the Civil War. This would enable them to have the Confederate Dystopia they always wanted. Maybe they can bring back slavery and minstrel shows.
