I'm looking into buying one for myself (because they're just sooo cute!!) but I'd like to know how much they go for before I invest in one.

If possible, I'd also like to know if they are expensive to keep up. I'm a freshman in college, and I only have a part-time job that pays minimal wage. Is that enough to maintain a healthy hedgehog?

I used to breed hedgehogs and I would charge $75 for males and a little more for females. Exotic colors will tend to cost more, but there is nothing wrong with having a standard Salt and Pepper, they are just as cute and make great pets like the rest of them.

Hedgehogs are not expensive to have unless they get sick. One of my hogs had a case of dermititis that ended up costing me $300 to have taken care of properly. I have had as many as 12 hedgehogs at one time in my breeding program and I ran it while in high school, before I had a job. They are easy, fun, smell fine, and some can be very smart.

I wouldn't pay more than $100. You aren't getting much "more" or "better" of a HH by paying a higher price. Just ask to see the parents, hold the mother, get a feel for her behavior, and look inbetween the baby's quills for an excessive amount of "dust". If this "dust" moves, you are looking at mites and that is not something you want to get into at all.

If the breeder is reluctant to show you their breeding program, their other hogs, the setup, etc. . . leave. There is no reason for them not to show you the conditions in which your hog was raised; it is something they should be proud of.

Depending on the gender, they can range from 90 - 150 dollars. They need a pretty big cage with lots of toys and space. And you will also need food and a couple hundred dollars saved up for emergency vet care just in case. Most of them don't really care for human contact much. And they are nocturnal, so they might keep you up at night. If you want one, make sure they are not illegal in your state.

In W. Canada, they're about $60.

Please don't buy one! They are a wild animal, do not cuddle and aren't a good "pet"! Plus... how would you like to be taken out of your home and put in another where you have no idea what's going on? Your natural instincts can't be used anymore!
