my definition of compassion is a sense of shared suffering, most often combined with a desire to alleviate or reduce such suffering; to show special kindness to those who suffer. Thus compassion is essentially empathy, though with a more active slant in that the compassionate person will seek to actually aid those they feel compassionate for.

Your deinition is one of the best that I have heard so far. To me, it's in two aspects of 'giving' and 'taking'.

Giving aspect is to provide kindness and love, in acts of giving and charity to those people in need.

Taking aspect is to take other's suffering away and taking their life burden off their shoulders. To share and empathise them.

Have a nice day!

Compassion is, in essence, a higher emotion than most of us can truly feel due to our over developed egos. It goes much further than empathy or being kind. It is total selflessness.

phoneticly, it´s a combination of 'companion' & 'passion' .
First is being a friend, a college, and second means giving all you have.
