Those are placeholders. Some are used to send and store attachments from your mail. Some are just files folders. Like if you watch a video online it gets stored temporarily on pc, or play a game. They are all Temporary as the name suggests. It is also a good place for trojans and worms to hide.

The temporary Internet file is where IE caches some frequently
accessed files for future use. For example, for some Java games, the browser will load all the jar files to the temporary Internet files such that the next time when you try to run the game, you don't have to load the jar files again.
For the problem you encountered, you probably unknowingly visit a site that has some malicious script. IE caches the files. You find the files from google desktop, and opens it. As you opens the file, the malicious script become active again.
If you don't want to cache any files, go to Tools->Internet Options,
and click Settings. Set the amount of disk space used to zero.

There are no files necessary for IE in the temp internet folder. Some of them may be html or other pages that speed up accessing a web site, but if you have broadband, you won't notice the difference.
Make sure you go through the cookies and delete anything from a site you do not recognize.

the proper way to clear the folders are via Tools - Internet Options - then under General tab, you clear these
Delete Cookies
Delete Files
Set the History to 1 or 0
Under Settings - Temporary Internet files Folders - you should set the amount of space to use to 10mb. The larger you set it, the more trash you would accumulate and god knows what rubbish you would be collecting there.
The other way is to dilligently delete the files everytime after you have finish surfing. you do this by start - all programs - accesories - system tools - disc clean up. choose the drive, usually a C:\.

most temp stuff in there just get rid of it.. and if you can't.... write down the names... then try to change the name of those things... then delete.
then scan.. scan, scan and scan scan scan!
temps files keep coming back... once in a great while it's good to unload them manually.
especially since you got junk on your machine now.
good to check your registry too.. oh how i wish i could find that registry doctor or something program.. it was nice.. it scanned the registry for you then it listed everything by name.. then it had options for date, date modified all that.. then you select and delete then it'll ask you ARE YA SURE!? all that junk.
cuz normally your registry is named such so you can't make sense of this or that too quickly and time is a factor...
temp stuff... delete it. it'll be back.
just be careful when fooling around folders like that.. don't touch anything else... until you learn more and feel comfortable with what you're doing.

Do a search on those files at your anti virus website or on a search engine. I had the same problem but my viruses were on Windows/system folder
I had to restart in safe mode and delete them because they were write protected.

feel free to delete the files and folders. They are temporary files and only used to work offline. Sometimes.

those are temporary folders where websites that you are viewing is stored(called cached) Depending on the setting, this information gets deleted iether immidealty or after sometime.
Now if you get virus/spyware/trojan, unfortunetly it won't get deleted by itself (people who make them are smart ) so you need to use some Antivirus/Antispyware to remove it.
