Despite not having their own, the Scots have been an integral part of the British Army for a couple of hundred years now. As a result, they have amassed a substantial amount of experience in warfare and continue to do so.
Thus in a "proper" war, the Irish wouldn't really have a chance. That said should the war be based on guerilla tactics then the Irish have a wealth of experience just because of the terrorist activity, both Catholic & Protestant, as I'm assuming that all religions would unite, however unrealistic, in a war and with these tactics would likely wage a war of attrition and likely win at the end of the day ...or rather years.

As an independent state, Ireland would be able to raise an army themselves, whereas Scotland couldn't, so in the first instance Ireland would win. However, an attack on any part of Great Britain would mean that NATO would be duty bound to defend Scotland - bringing in the likes of USA, Germany, France - countries you wouldn't want to mess with. The end result would be a devastating defeat for Ireland

By "beating up the English" you mean those cowardly little scumbags who plant their shitty little bombs in civillian shopping centres in London and Manchester and run away as fast as their ickle leggies will carry them?
