Hmmm...well that depends on what team you want to make. I would say that by high school you should definitely understand the basics of all of the positions and be able to perform the basic hits(drive, push, slap) proficiently. If you happen to be more skilled at the basics and you show intensity, willingness to learn and understand, and enthusiasm then you have a good chance at making the Varsity team.

The amount to run is a difficult thing because some coaches are very tough on conditioning while others aren't.

My coach in high school was very tough so we ran a lot. Field hockey is more than running because it involves bending and pushing/hitting a ball as hard as you can so it is very physically demanding.

One of the best drills we used to do for conditioning was called the box drill. We would jog around the perimeter of the field and every few minutes the coach would blow a whistle and we would have to sprint until he blew it again, when we would resume jogging. You can do this on a track by sprinting one straightaway and jogging the rest of a lap. We used to do it for 10 minutes to start and then get to the point where we could run for the full half(30 min) like that.

Good luck! Congrats on picking the BEST sport EVER! :)

Well, you should go running for a bit, maybe a mile or two. And it's important to work on your passing, shooting, stopping, dribbling, and indian dribbling. And don't be afraid to ask the coach for some help too, they like that you respect their opinions.
