I think your dead on. The left is being taken over by the looney left. Joe Lieberman is a hard hard liberal. His disagrees with them on one thing, the war. (Yet 80% of congress agreed on the Iraq war in the original vote) He agrees with the abortion, stem cell, and other "liberal" issues. Yet hes totally thrown under the tire by the liberals. Keep in mind, this was their nominated choice for Vice President only 6 years ago. Amazing the turn around.
I read in in liberal post, I mean the Washington Post, how worried liberals should be in the movement of the Democratic Party.
We Republicans have been saying this for months

Well, I'm not sure what makes a "true Democrat" in your eyes. It would seem you're not one, so I'm not sure you're able to judge. Some people might not think that supporting the Republican President on a majority of issues makes you a "true Democrat".
Lieberman is a good man, and his views are very sincere, but they are out of touch with most of his contstituents, of either party. The effort to defeat him was grassroots in nature, and included many moderate to liberal Republicans, like Lowell Weicker. Many prominent Democrats that you would view as "liberals" campaigned for Lieberman.
The radio and television commercials that featured quotes and asking voters to attempt to tell the words of Joe Lieberman from the words of George Bush were very effective. A Connecticut friend of mine said if he'd wanted a Republican six years ago he would have voted for one.
Edited in response to John's post to add:
Lieberman was far from a doctrinaire liberal or conservative - he has gotten respectable ratings from conservative groups.
2004 Senator Lieberman supported the interests of the Conservative Index - The John Birch Society 40 percent in Fall 2004.
2006 Senator Lieberman supported the interests of the Americans for Prosperity 57 percent in 2006.
2005 Senator Lieberman supported the interests of the Republican Liberty Caucus - Personal Liberties on personal liberties 44 percent in 2005.
2005 Senator Lieberman supported the interests of the Republican Liberty Caucus 25 percent in 2005.
He's hard to characterize since he's an independent thinker, liberal on some issues, conservative on others. Check out his ratings from various interest groups, as well as thos of any other elected official, at Project Vote Smart, linked below.
But the war issue proved to be too much for him - this is a major issue in Connecticut and people feel very strongly about it. He just didn't move with the tide of voter opinion.
And, for the record, Bill, Hillary, Chris Dodd, and almost every elected Democratic official campaigned for Lieberman, not Lamont. Anyone who thinks otherwise might have been listening to Liimbaugh instead of paying attention to the facts.

If it pisses the republicans off then it's obviously the right thing.
A true democrat would not leave the party like Joe Leiberman did.
If joe was so dedicated to the party, why did he leave the Democratic party this morning? Answer: He's not a democrat anymore. I'll bet anyone money that he is the next featured speaker at the republican convention.

Democrats just kissed a seat good-bye. Either Joe wins as an independent (68% of voters in Connecticut) or he splits the Democrat vote and the GOP wins.

It is democracy at work, unlike the repukes if we do not like a representives stance on something we vote them out. Repuglicans get in lockstep and would back Charlie Manson if he were a repuke. I see nothing wrong with democracy and wonder what the repuke's have against it.
