We only effectively own them. If they had oil or something, oh HO HO!

I'm British and everyone here has no problems with the Canadians but few people like the general US population. Canada is a great country as far as i'm aware and although i've never been there i will do in the future. America is not as great as you think and within the next 50 years you will no longer be a super power. I would rather be Canadian than American any day.

What the F*ck do you mean, why does Canada exist?
Why does America exist?
How can you say we have no pride, have you ever even VISITED Canada? Can you name the capital of Canada?
I think I have a conversation with my friends DAILY about how lucky we are to live in such a great country, all the same opportunities as America, but better... cleaner air, more nature.. friendly people, free health care, great schools... everything I could ever want and more. If I ever chose to live in another country for a while, it would be somewhere in Europe thats for damn sure, but I'm definitely raising my kids in Canada. I feel bad for you, you have no idea how awesome it is to live here.
PS we have the largest source of fresh water in the world.
and the second largest resource of oil after the middle east. (alberta)

Ha! Because they would rather die than be American. You have no clue. FYI Canada has 178.8 billion barrels of oil reserves 2nd to Saudi Arabia. As for them having no history you obviously don't know the definition of "history" lol. I used to live in the states and moved up here and haven't looked back. The states are going down the p*sser faster than you can read what I'm writing. But you have fun down there!
Famous quote: "Why do you smile when the noose is hanging around your neck?"
You have no idea. Unfortunately, they're going to drag Canada down with them. Have you ever lived in Canada? No. Get out of your bubble. All the Canadian people want is peace and good times.

GREAT QUESTION!
Canada is still part of the common wealth of the united kingdom
Canada is a free country mostly because the British Empire collapsed.
Except for the oil reserves in the mountain Providences and the lumber, there are not a lot of natural resources to exploit from Canada
The USA is already diversified enough, Californians act like they are their own country, so do, New Yorkers, so do Texans, so do Floridians, adding Quebecois and Vancoverans would just stall our legislative bodies
Canada gets to enjoy being protected by its mighty neighbor and in turn the US gets a place its draft dodgers can go and speak English
Maybe someday the 2 countries will merge, but it would need to benefit both countries and both would need to give up their current identities
already we share so many treaties, it certainly appears there is no border

I heard the Canada would have been part of the United States if it wasn't for the War of 1812 which caused Canadians to get Nationalist feelings after the Americans invaded to fight the British.

Canada has a longer history than the US. WE were the ones opening up the continent in the 1500's. And don't forget that little war in 1812, when America tried to take over Canada (because of people just like you), when we sent your sorry American butts running back home to Mommy!
In short, over my dead body (and I am definitely not alone). Canada is unique and special and in no way can be compared to self-indulgent USA!

Woah, I may be American, but this question really got under my skin.
Canada exists, because it is a seperate country, but rests on the continent of North America. Asking this question is sort of like saying why aren't all of the countries in Europe that are connected all one of the same. BTW...if Canada being attached should be part of the US, then I suppose Mexico should as well - in your line of thinking?
What has Canada ever done in history...well, tons, but in the very recent past...as in July of this year - Canadian technology was responsible for the success of the recent shuttle mission -Astronaut Chris Hadfield - the first Canadian to walk in space in 2001 explained:
"You can't launch Discovery without Canadian technology," he said, referring to Canadarm 2, an improved version of the robotic arm that can now scan the shuttle for damage following takeoff, a necessity following the 2003 Columbia disaster.
Hadfield said most of the major robotic decisions involving Discovery will be handled by Canadians working in NASA's mission control rooms in Houston.
And for the first time ever, there will be a subsidiary control room in CSA headquarters.
"For the first time during a shuttle mission we will be bringing the (Canada)arm to life... from here, from Montreal," said Hadfield.
Though astronauts aboard the shuttle will still operate the robotic arm for intricate operations, such as a spacewalk, a Montreal-based remote operator will steer the arm during basic tasks.
Take celebrities, singers, bands: Avril Lavigne, Pamela Anderson, Shania Twain, Nelly Furtado, Barenakedladies, Keanu Reeves, Celine Dion, Alanis Morissette, Bryan Adams, Neil Young, Jim Carrey, Sarah McLachlan to name just a few....I'm sure they are proud to be Canadian.
ICE HOCKEY ! Gosh, I love Ice Hockey!
1800, Ice Hockey had its origin in Windsor, Nova Scotia. King's College School Boys began adapting the Irish field game of Hurley to the ice...Yup, Ice Hockey originated in Canada.
Canadians are a proud bunch, ever see a sporting event televised from Canada? Almost the entire audience sings - yes actually sings their National Anthem, 'Oh Canada' betcha didn't know that about half of citizens of the US don't know all of the words to the Star Spangled Banner and guess what else? Half of our citizens can't even tell you that the SSB is the title of our national anthem!
Study up on Canadian history and maybe you might even find Canada to be a better place to live than the good old USA.

Canada achieved many things in history.
What?
Go look it up retard, just because your view of the world is so small and your intelligence to match, it doesn't mean other things have not accomplished anyone.
I bet you think that Chicago is far from NY. No you nitwid, it's not. England is. Expand your horizons and get a grip - otherwise you'll just be a sheep mosing around repeating things that you've heard like a little parrot.

Read your treaties, the Treaty of Paris and the Jay Treaty. They are the framework for US relations with Canada.
If Canada and the US merged, French would have to become another official language of the USA, along with Spanish (the other Treaty of Paris, ending the Spanish American War, governing Puerto Rico affairs along with the Organic Act). And Navajo (and other native languages, including Hawaiian and Inuit.
