I am a traveler and want to seel imported goods from overseas (Asia and Africa especially). I was wondering how things work with the import/export taxes. What am I allowed to do? Any suggestions and applicable facts would be appreciated.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Import/Export Specific:
* Building an Import/Export Business, 3rd Edition by Kenneth D. Weiss
* Import/Export: How to Get Started in International Trade by Carl A. Nelson
* Start Your Own Import/Export Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Ups) by Entrepreneur Press
* Importing Into the United States: A Guide for Commercial Importers by United States Custom Service

* Retail Business Kit for Dummies by Rick Segel
* Specialty Shop Retailing: How to Run Your Own Store Revised by Carol L. Schroeder
* So You Want To Own The Store: Secrets to Running a Successful Retail Operation by Mort Brown

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

If you are planning to start a business importing items into the USA, I suggest you read the following US Bureau of Custom's papers

Check with the authorities on whatever planet you are from, since you evidently are not of this Earth. On our planet, laws and rules vary from what we call "country" to country (or nation or state). Unless you specify what country (etc.), one can only provide a general answer: check your country's rules and the rules of the country you plan to import from.

There are rules regarding old artifacts, fossils, living things (plant, animal, insect or microbe), things derived from living things (ivory, skins, fur, etc.).

As for starting a business generally, again the rules vary from country to country and, in some countries, from state to state within the country. There are a lot of web sites offering help for starting a business. If you are not capable of doing that research, you should hire an Earthling to help you. Anyone under 21 would be best.

We don't have enought information to advise you. What state or country are you in? Are you wanting to import them or simply retail them? The market is already flooded with Oriental and Indian imports. Just go to any flea market. Decide what it is you want to do, then get off Yahoo Answers and use your computer to start researching. Good luck.
