I used to trust my grandmother that way.
Then my ex bf when i first fell in love. Now I don't anymore.
I think it gets harder to trust the older you get.

I generally trust people... but I also accept the fact that they are human.

(In other words, it's possible to trust their intentions, while accepting that sometimes they will fail you simply because they are not perfect.)

It helps to also assess people -- get a feel for how they think, how and why they make decisions, what matters to them, how to properly "read" their motivations through their particular behavior and speech. If you can get a handle on what's important to someone and the "rules" by which they approach life, you can quickly learn in what areas they are trustworthy and in what areas they might slip up and you need to be careful.

Idealistically, I wish we could just trust someone completely without ever having to compare what they do/say with what they've promised; but we're simply human, so even the best people mess up from time to time and the worst people actively take advantage of others for their own benefit.

I agree that the older you get the harder it is to trust people. Because of bad experiences with people I choose to live in isolation mentally. I find solace in being alone than with other people.
