1. Lack of popular support in the U.S. - just like today with Iraq.
2. A corrupt South Vietnames regime
For all the morons in the discussion board who think we got our asses kicked, look at the statistics of Viet Cong to U.S. casualties. We were winning at every step, but media portrayal (just like today) of the events taking place sabotaged an effort that would have made Vietnam a prosperous nation vice where it is today. Yeah communism is great, just look at Vietnam's economy today. A beautiful country rife with corrupt communists exploiting their people for the greater good (read: the government)

Because people realized that Johnson had made a major boo boo by ramping up the conflict. Also, we could not win with the rules of engagement. Our involvement made no sense as we entered a country which just wanted to be left alone. The major justification for getting involved was the Domino Theory which turned out not to be so much a problem. Viet Nam was not a threat to world peace. Even McNamara stated later it was a mistake to get involved.
None of this Viet Nam debate has anything to do with Iraq.

I was in Vietnam for 7 years 1963-1970, and I watched the support of a corrupt government, a disillusionment of the people, political moves in Washington, a decay of morale, corruption of US officials, useless programs, huge profit margins for American companies, escalation in bombing of Laos, the increase of paid troops from Thailand, the Philippines, TaiWan, and South Korea, and increase of brutality....but an increase in the resolve of the North Vietnamese....we could have continued the war for ten more years but would still have pulled out. Kennedy planned to stop it in 1963 but was killed before he could implement it.

Because the war was unjustifiably costing troops.
The point of restoring a vicious power into power was not sane. And the domino theory could not be proven to be true. So it was like why continue this crap?
We gained nothin but an ally who we'd end up defending for a LONG LONG LONG time costing even more resources. Why should we? Oh yea cause we think communism spreading there would affect us.
