I am not aware of masturbation addressed in the Bible or the Koran. There are some that say God designed us to have an inborn sense of right and wrong. So no matter what your religion, or even if you don't have a religion, you know that stealing is wrong, rape is wrong, etc.
For the married man, he is used to sex. Being without a wife leaves the man without the sexual partner he used to have. In my eyes, it is better to relieve oneself with masturbation rather than walk around with lust in your heart that could lead to fornication. I would advise you not to think of anyone you know personally while committing the act (think of the former wife, but not your secretary!) because that could lead to sexual desire for that person.

No it is not unholy, as a matter of fact masterbation is healthy providing that it is not excessive. It is a great releaser of stress and enables a man to last long when with a woman. No worries my friend.

Masturbation is always holy for the hole-less. Fear not, you will not burn in hell for it.
