The most important skill is Listening, which is not as easy as it sounds. Other skills are basic communication, compassion, empathy, and reasoning. The acute hospital setting is unique in that a lot can be happening at one time. You can be in the ER helping a family cope with a tragic accident, and then be called to the Nursery to counsel a worried father-to-be. I have worked in Hospitals for 20+ yrs and it can be great. The more you are around hospitals the easier it gets. I grew up in them (my dad is a doctor) so it was natural for me to work there. Bottom line is that excellent patient service comes from caring and being compassionate to the patients situation.

Patience, humanism, service-mindedness and social responsibility are needed as psychic background. Presence of mind, time-sense, physical and mental agility, motherly attitude towards the patients and emotional balance are quite essential to the professionals in this field.
