I am a liberal and proud of it. Most of the good change that has happened in the world comes from liberalism. Allot of bad things too. Conventionalism to me equals conservatism thus conservatism equals no change. When we don't update our values, morality and so forth we are Conservative. People often talk about right wingers being the moral party. It was not too long ago that the Conservatives voted against things like civil rights, freedom of religion and things like that.

I'm not going to say what I am, but I can see why some people may choose to think as a Liberal.

There may be a lot of really sound philosophy and thinking in Conservatism, but there is the far right end of it that often has no room for attempting to understand the root of certain problems. On Conservative talk radio, for example, people have an attitude about people who may need welfare asistance as if all welfare recipients are just greedy bums who don't want to work. While there is much welfare fraud and abuse, there are also people who honestly didn't do anything to create their own situation. Maybe they're the 55-year-old guy who was laid off and can't get hired quickly enough to save his apartment, maybe they're the woman who left a dangerous relationship and found herself without a car, medical insurance, dental insurance and possibly with emotional exhaustion that makes it impossible for her to work. I'm just using these examples. There are all kinds of legitimate circumstances that force a person who doesn't want to be on welfare on it. My point is Conservatives on talk radio think they're being "unemotional" by refusing to consider that some welfare recipients truly did nothing to create the situation. They call Liberals "bleeding hearts", and they say Liberals don't think. The truth is if anyone has to face the cold, hard, truth that some people didn't do something to create their own situation then solving the problem of something like welfare becomes a little harder to appropriately deal with.

On Conservative talk radio you hear people saying how homeless people are bums and should be thrown in jail. You hear how if they didn't drink or use drugs they wouldn't be homeless. Again, while there are people who allowed drugs or liquor to destroy their lives and leave them homeless, there are most likely some who didn't need to resort to taking a drink until they found themselves out in the cold on a February night (with whatever other bad things they may have had to deal with in their life on their mind) and faced with the feeling of either losing their mind or else taking something to help them keep their sanity. Even in the case of some drug addicts or alcoholics, there are times when life can have so many unbearable losses that maybe taking something to calm oneself down beats the alternative of suicide to stop the pain. Someone who hasn't had that kind of pain may find it hard to imagine, but people who have had that know how bad it is.

Conservatives (particularly those on talk radio) do have a lot of good ideas and good thinking, but if a person had to choose between some of the good ideas and philosophies of Conservatives and Liberal compassion that may often be well grounded as often as it may not be; then it is easy to see why someone may choose Liberalism.

Then, too, there are people who just disagree with the general approach of Conservatism.

Finally, while Conservatives don't like the idea of the government involving itself in some things to one degree or another, Liberals think the government is the only thing that has the power to "direct" and "guide" and "educate" a population that they believe needs that kind of thing. While many people believe such involvement is not only not necessary (because they believe the population is intellligent) but against American principles, Liberals are aware that there is a lot of ignorance out there and pretending it isn't isn't facing reality any more than it is facing reality to believe everyone is ignorant.

Many people aren't 100% on board with either Conservatives or Liberals, so they zero in on the issues that are important to them and go with whoever it is that seems to be trying to address those issues.

I can't think up any other reasons.......

A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife
stayed home. He wanted her to see what he went through so he prayed:
"Dear Lord: I go to work every day and put in
8 hours while my wife merely stays at home.
I want her to know what I go through, so please
allow her body to switch with mine for a day. Amen.

God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man's wish. The next
morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman.
He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids,
Set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches,
Drove them to school, came home and picked up
the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners
And stopped at the bank to make a deposit, went grocery shopping,
Then drove home to put away the groceries,
Paid the bills and balanced the checkbook.
He cleaned the cat's litter box and bathed the dog.
Then it was already 1 P.M. and he hurried to make the beds,
do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
Ran to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with
them on the way home.
Set out milk and cookies and got the kids organized to do their homework,
Then set up the ironing board and watched TV while he did the ironing.

At 4:30 he began peeling potatoes and washing vegetables for salad,
breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh beans for supper.
After supper, he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded
laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed. At 9 P.M. he was exhausted
and, though his daily chores weren't finished, he went to bed where he was
expected to make love, which he managed to get through without complaint.
The next morning, he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said,
Lord,
I don't know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife’s being
able to stay home all day. Please, oh please, let us trade back."
The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied, "My son, I feel you have learned
your lesson and I will be happy to change things back to the way they were.
You'll just have to wait nine months, though. You got pregnant last night."
