A bot is a computer program that can pose as a chatroom user. Some just post messages in the chat room. Others can respond to others in the chatroom based on simple triggers. Some bots also send private messages to various users.

Bots are frequently used to advertise products in the chatroom. In general, they are a nuisance and make chatting more difficult for those who wish to have a conversation.

As others explained, a bot is short for robot and is a computer program logged into the chatroom. While bots are used to spam and advertise many bots are used to help humans in the chatroom. There are bots that record the chatroom conversation and make the log available on the web for reference. Others forward your message to them to a search engine like Yahoo! or Google and answer you with the search results. Some keep track of when people join/leave the chatroom so you can ask them when your friends where last seen. The possibilities are endless.

A bot is a message, all they basically do is send out one message over and over and annoy people. There really is no one on the other end. They are usually Porn Bots. Sending out a link saying hey we got free webcams at www. whatever.com trying to get people to go to their site. One of the easiest way to spot them now is they say "I am not a bot" or "there are too many bots here" or other such silly lines. Yet there next message is about a site. They think this will get people to their site, and clearly it does to some degree or they would stop.
