I sounds as though they used your computer to bounce a call off of. It orginates elsewhere sent to you and then to where ever. AnviVirus products are essential but in one word "Firewall!", get a good one. There are a lot out there. I use AVG. They were able to get through what ever firewall you have. Lastly Update daily hourly if you can. Good luck with that bill.

I found the paid version of Spyware Doctor to be very good. As far as I know, it will catch spyware that causes dial-up internet connections to dial long distance numbers.

I hope you are able to avoid paying the unauthorized charges.

You have a rouge dialer, or a spyware which dials unauthroized calls to other people, especially strangers. Usually they will target your contacts.
Get anti-spyware such as Spybot Search and Destroy. It is the best anti-spyware besides Ad-Aware SE.

One of the best tricks to use is a dedicated telephone line that is allowed to call locally only. That way, if you do pick up a nasty dialer, it won't go through.
