As a child I have read a story. I think that the writer was Dickens, but I am not sure. Would like to know the name (and author if not Dickens).

It was about young man returning from America (to England). He sent his rich cousins letter in which he explained that he is broke (which wasn't true) to see their reaction.

They didn't care about him, except the young girl that lived in their household and had one shorter leg. He borrowed him only money she had - one golden guinea. They become friends, fell in love...

Than he proposes her, she accepts, and his cousins became furious when he reveal that he is richer than they are.

Something like that.

I'm almost certain it's not Dickens.

Martin Chuzzlewit has a young man who comes back from America, but he comes back poorer than he went. That one has rapacious cousins but not young woman with a shorter leg.

Our Mutual Friend has a young man who comes back from abroad and let's people think he's dead so he can find out what his bride to be is really like. But that isn't the one you mean either.
