Actually, the new director for X-3, Matthew Vaughn decided that he would hold the role for Gambit for none other then Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. The role was supposed to be a cameo, that would lead way for a longer and bigger role in X-Men 4. The problem with including Gambit any earlier in the X-3 series was that his personality is very similar to that of Hugh Jackman's character Wolverine, and his powers are very similar to the plasma blast that Cyclops utilizes. Johnathan Rhys-Meyers unfortunately never signed the contract for the cameo, and the director really didn't have another actor in mind.

To answer the second part of your question, absolutely Gambit is part of the good gang of mutants. He made his first appearance in Uncanny X-men #266. He was a rogue who later joined the team. However, in Uncanny X-men #350 we find out that Gambit was involved with Sinister dealing with the mass killings of the Marauders a gang of underground mutants. Gambit how ever returns to the X-men in Uncanny X-men #361. He has been a "good mutant" ever since.

Amen borther! I was thinking the same thing the entire time. It made me mad because he was my favorite character from X-men. They also left out Jubilee which makes no sense. It was all screwed up. Beast was actually the only character (that I can remember) that ever died and he lived on while most of the rest of them died off. They went way off the scales to find an ending to the X-men in the movies. I agree they should have had Gambit. I was so upset that I went out and got a kitten and named it Gambit (true story)

his name was shown in X2, and everyone thought that might have been a hint of his apperance in X3. but the writers of the X series said that this is only one story of the X-men, there will be more that don't even relate to the first 3 movies. So hopefully we'll get some gambit in there.
