The latest CPU out there is a pentium IV (P4), which is quite the upgrade from II. The first problem is that it might simply not fit (like big V8 in little Pinto). Secondly, you've got the operating system (OS), RAM and your various disk drives to consider. They might not work with your new CPU or you might simply not get all the speed and power your new CPU is capable of without upgrading them as well (like putting in a new engine and not upgrading the transmission too). I have seen complete systems (3GHz P4 incl. monitor, printer/scanner/fax/copier, preloaded MS Suite and WordPerfect Suite software, etc) for $800 CDN. You might be further ahead to just buy a whole new system. They may even "stream" your old hard-drive onto the new one for you.

Upgrading a CPU will not affect your data or settings. You will have to consider the following:
Front Side Bus speed
What is the fastest CPU the motherboard can handle?
Will you need a better fan?
Will you want to upgrade your RAM as well?

One thing to check is

Can your motherboard support the chip you are buying, as many motherboards (older and newer) only support a certain "type" of chip.
