13 is considered to be unlucky in western belief for to reasons. 1, there were 13 original apostles, then Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver. 2, there are to be 13 members in a coven. Altho that is not the case anymore.

In the east they believe in balance and symetry and everything has a place and a time. Many numbers are given a specific meaning and its the meaning its self which is of importance. Being from the west I dont find number thirteen unlucky but rather interesting as I am the baby of my family and the 13th kid. Its all a matter of perspective for ones self in how numbers are either lucky or unlucky. I have added a link at the bottom which i really enjoyed and thought I would pass on

It's because of the "Imperial system". For so long in the West everything was measured in basic units of twelve. It was a most convenient number as it could be subdivided so many ways. But add one more of anything and you get thirteen and things get awkward. Tough luck!
The Chinese did not like our imperial system although I'm not sure why they consider 13 lucky. Thing is that so many cultures have different lucky and unlucky numbers.

Thirteen is regarded as an unlucky number in many cultures. One (probably unverifiable) hypothesis holds that 13 is a reflection of the human fear of the unknown, since it is the first number that cannot be enumerated using our 10 fingers and 2 feet. Unreasoned fear of the number 13 is termed triskaidekaphobia.
Amongst some Chinese people, it is regarded as a lucky number because it sounds similar to "實ç", which means "must be alive". But this belief is not universal, or even known to all Chinese. Also, 13 is regarded as unlucky by those Chinese under the influence of foreign cultures.

Italians also think 13 is a lucky number. I have seen Italians wearing a necklace with the number 13 as a pendant. It is merely a cultural superstition in some areas of the west.

Friday the 13th certainly not a lucky ones.
But chines has a subtle means on treating numbers, as it would be 1+3 = 4, which is less than 10, as for 3.
or it could be re-written as XIII or IIIX (= 8 ~ VIII), as by on singly dimensioned, could be started from 0...9,and stated the count from 1st dim, it would be 12 elements. But whats in it ?

It may have something to do with the language. The number 4 is considered bad luck because the word for 4 is pronounced like the word for death. So maybe the word for 13 sounds like the word for treasure or longevity, or some such.

The answer is simple. You only need to look at a world globe to understand. Since China and the USA are on opposite sides of the world they are always moving in opposite directions.
See how simple that is?
