Okay for the past five years I have stayed home to raise my son!! Now he is going to Kindergarten and I want to get a job. I have been trying for a while now and no one will hire me. My resume, obviously, is pathetic. I am thinking about becoming an STNA. I am trying to get a job in a nursing home, what would be my best way to go about that? Any other ideas? I know computers and office procedures, but only what I learned in high school 7 years ago. Help me!!!!!!

Relax... help is on the way. If you want work at a nursing home, you'll have to take some credit hours through your local junior college... no big deal. As for your computer skills, no doubt you'll have to take some refresher courses. As for getting back in the workforce, why not choose something that you really enjoy? My suspicion is that you really don't want to work at a nursing home but simply see it as a viable option at this point. What do you REALLY want to do... that should be the goal. Now to get to your goal, you might work at a nursing home, retail, sales, customer, service, or a myriad of other places, but you need to eventually work to what you truly want to do. As for your resume, don't include dates... list your skills, previous employers, etc. Your resume must be skill-based because that's what will get you hired: what you can do for your potential employer. Be sure to polish you're interviewing skills. If you're only 7 years out of high school, you're young enough to have an advantage over others who have been out of the workplace for even longer.

The best way to get come skills and capabilities is to volunteer in as a STNA. Also when drafting your CV avoid using chronology order and instead focus on highlighting your best points particularly on the first page. Remember that every prospective employer has only 5 seconds to check your resume be creative to attract their attention more

After 5 years, you have no choice but to upgrade your skills if you want to compete for a job with the teenagers who would be trying for the same entry level jobs.

If there is a Jr. College, a business school, a private school... such as ITT, etc, then you are going to have to spend the time and money go upgrade your skills or you have nothing to offer a perspective employer.

I wish you luck.

Starting again is a real drag! Starting at the bottom again, taking all that flack, low pay and bad hours. I think you have to deiced what you really want to do, and just keep putting in applications.
You might even have to take a job in fast food just to build some work history again. I think you are more apt to get a job if you already have one!

Go to the nursing home and apply for a job. DO NOT call them and ask if they are hiring. ONLY a lazy person does that. Selling yourself is the first step in getting a job. Go for it.
