My husband and I are both writers. We've been published by publishing houses and we have self-published.
Depending on the book, I'd encourage you to consider self-publishing. Anymore, it is very easy. You can do as few, or as many, runs of the book as you want...as often as you want. You maintain more control over the book, so you are free to bargain and market the book. Obviously, you make more on the book. Its not unusual for first time authors to only make about $.10 on the dollar when they use a publishing house.
If money is an issue, venture publishing is another option. That's where you find someone to basically invest in the book. You still have a lot of control, but the "investor" gets a cut on all sales.
If you still want to pursue publishing, join one of the national writers' associations. They provide all kinds of advice on how to get published.
Edit: What a coincidence. One of my writing newsletters arrived today with an article on this very topic. Follow this link: http://www.writersweekly.com/the_latest_from_angelahoycom/003568_08092006.html

Research Publishers that publish what type of book you are writing- go to book store and just write all the address out of them. They also make Publisher resource books but they are a couple hundred dollars and they list all the publisher for the year on them. I bet you could find one on the internet or a tradeshow if you attend them. You just have to watch out for scams, a lot of companies will publish your book if you agree to buy 1,000 copies and that kinda bull. Just send out a lot of copies to a lot of different type of publishers and if they like your stuff you'll get a call. It's one of those things that is hard to brake into. I had a girlfriend who works for a publisher but her company does law books!

I want to get a book published but I am afraid of rejection by top publishers because of English punctuation and draft contents.
I am a Word Processing Secretary and I want to get a computer and type my own journals and notes and publish them to make money to go to school. I want to see my stuff in print so I am at a do it myself mode. Check out XLIBRIS Publishing I am and I got a full color of what a childrens book could look like and a sample of what a professional book could be in the mail.
This may help you to self publish and they want you to pay for the printing of your book in a professional format and they will get it launched in a perfect form to get sales from major bookstores.
I am in dream of being at my book-signing already.

Consider publishing your book yourself. If you write your book as a single pdf file, it's quite affordable to get it printed, and your printer can help you with promotion, ISBN number and such, or point you to a company that will do that.
