To the above answer, a cars age does not determine its fuel consumption for all you know it only as 1000 miles on the clock. If the car has been well looked after and regularly serviced then it is likely to return the manufactures MPG quoted figures.

I wouldthink a 1.6 mondeo, driven steaderly on the motorway would return high 30's MPG and mid 30's around town, therefore, a 56 mile journey will cost around £7.50 maybe less if the drivining is motorway or A road.

About 9 - 10 pounds. A 14 year old car will not do anything like it's original fuel consumption, so if you get 30 mpg you'll be doing well. Plus you also need to consider the other costs in running a car as part of the equation.
