screw this guy.

i am by no means a Mac expert, so i would check out http://discussions.apple.com they will be more helpful than these high school kids on their parents' Dell.

As for the HD i use a Maxtor and it's great, and i believe most DVD writers would work with your Mac. You should also upgrade to 10.4 (or wait for 10.5). for no other reason besides it is awesome.

Yeah i would say the same thing, use disk utility, repair permissions. if you're not happy do it from the the install disk . One thing I would suggest is that you expel norton completely from your computer, although they build a version for macs they are notorious for causing problems, almost everyone i know with norton in a mac has had a headache because of it. get rid of it. if it's convenient do a complete reinstall after. or better yet upgrade to 10.4, it's miles ahead.
Sorry, can't answer the slave drive writer query.
Not sure what hardware you have but check out LG or Logitech for DVD writers

Macs use a formating called journaled HFS+. This catalog B Tree error is saying that your journaled system is a messed up. I had that problem when I had that anti-virus "virus" Norton on my old G4. Try running a repair disk from Disk Utility. If that doesnt' work running it within the OS, boot using your install disk and run Disk Utility from there.

you will need a DVD writer, also you will need software to do it like Nero burning rom and DVD-R ot burn on it, nowadays DVD writers are cheap check prices in www.newegg.com,
if your computer and your camera have a firewire connector buy a cable to transfer the video via that cable you will get more quality than the one you get from an USB cable
