A tampon is inserted into the vagina canal and a napkin is secured to you under wear on the outside. As far as which is better well that is a personal perfernce. Napkins can sometime be uncomfortable and bulky and a tampon is usually pretty comfortable and does not restrict your mocements asa much.

I am sure there is more to it than just internal or external use. The absorbancy of a tampon is most likely 3-5x that of a napkin. I bet they arent even make of the same material.
