I was cutting down some poison ivy and poison oak last night but was wearing gloves and a long sleeve shirt. Just to be sure, I jumped in the swimming pool when I was done (1 hour later) and rinsed off.

Do you think the chlorine in the pool would rinse the oil off before it reacted with my skin?

No... you need soap and water to get rid of the oil. They make a special soap for poison ivy that neutralizes the oil. OR you could just bathe and wash it off REALLY well. The oil takes 24 hours to start it's effects so get to it!

Oh, and BTW... the oil can remain on clothes for up to one year after... even when washed so becareful with those clothes and washing them with others! Look on the web for an additive for your laundry or toss the stuff out.

If you really had gloves and sleeves covering you, it should not matter.

However, since the chemicals in these plants are oils, a swimming pool will not work on them, and chlorine is not all that good at attacking that sort of compound. There's not a whole lot that can be done in the oils made contact, but it sounds to me that the steps you took should prevent an outbreak unless you are hyper sensitive to it.

I get poison ivy just thinking about it! I got it once just by picking up
my husbands shirt that he was wearing when he was cutting brush. It takes a lot of hot soapy water to wash the oils away.

Sure. Soap and water is best and most effective if used within fifteen minutes to half an hour after contact.

Can only speak from personal experience when I used plain creek water to rinse off after tromping thru p ivy, did not break out.
